Our pick of the the top Japanese restaurants that will satisfy your tummies without costing an arm and a leg. And they're centrally located too:
Fukuichi Japanese Dining
A reliable, quiet, mid-range Japanese in Orchard
If you’re in the Somerset area and looking for a quiet, all-encompassing Japanese restaurant to have a meal, Fukuichi is your Sun with Moon. This 150-seat restaurant has a sushi bar, tatami room, a sake bar and a VIP room for 12, and serves set lunches and dinners. It’s not just affordable with good standards, its location at TripleOne Somerset also allows tired shoppers to hide away from the crowds and recharge. Start with the
kani tofu (cold crab tofu with a century egg and mirin sauce, $6) and sashimi ($45 or $78 for a set of assorted raw fish) – though the fish is from frozen stock, the quality is as good as it gets for a walk-in restaurant that serves everything. The
nika fagura kushi (grilled beef in a blanket of foie gras sauce, $35) make for generously-flavoured bites.

BOOK A TABLE HERE | Standing Sushi Bar
For reliable dishes all around
Even if you aren’t connected – though we know most of you are – you’ll still get plenty of offers from Standing Sushi Bar. A check-in on Foursquare (two pieces of free sushi every day if you’re the mayor of the 8 Queen Street outlet) and the chain restaurant’s promotions page on its website will reveal $3 salmon sashimi, $2 sake and $5 umeshus on Mondays and Thursdays; 50 per cent off sushi, sashimi and alcohol on Tuesdays; and 50 per cent off rolls and handrolls on Wednesdays. At 8 Queen Street – we also like this one for its easy access to SAM for that post-meal cultural walk – you can never go wrong with the reliable
chirashi ($30), crisp chicken
karaage ($10, deep-fried chicken) and the standard California roll ($9). And no, you won't be standing the entire time.

Sun with Moon
For always-there variety on Orchard Road
Though the preposition in its name irks us, Sun with Moon has always been our go-to Orchard Japanese eat (even more when we can’t take standing in the snaking lines of Itacho Sushi). We were taken by the beef (Note: not wagyu, just regular beef) and foie gras
kamameshi ($20), a hot, bottom-charred rice dish that features thin, but indulgent, slivers of duck liver and well-marinated beef. We like that this crescent-shaped restaurant space is not smack in the midst of the Orchard Road crowds, but still has enough mass appeal to hold its own buzz. Even better: Sun with Moon serves everything from assorted sashimi (starting at $29.80) to teppanyaki ($27.80-$29.80 ) to a popular tofu cheesecake ($6.50), and that a set meal here can be had for as low as $20, making it a good place to enjoy a meal and stretch your shopping legs. The restaurant can get a little chilly though, so have something to keep you warm.
