#252 : 24 Real-Life Habits Of Actual Couples
Saturday, May 23, 2015 @ 8:15 PM
When it comes to relationship advice, sometimes it’s more effective to see what’s working for others than seek out so called ‘relationship experts’. So when one person asked how he could improve his relationship on this Reddit page, not only did he get a lot of responses, but they were actually real life things that the people sharing them were actually doing in their own relationships. Take a look at some of the most up-voted responses he got…
#1. Take his towel while he’s showering and do this

“I like to steal her towel and put it in the dryer. Then when I hear her shut off the water I know I have about thirty seconds befor she opens the shower door cuz she has little wiping her face off and pushing her hair I back routine. So I open the door and wrapper in the hot towel, kiss her cheek while her eyes are still shut and walk away.”
#2. Don’t say sorry – say “thank you” instead

“When you say, “Sorry for being a jerk,” the other person is forced to either call you a jerk, or say it wasn’t a big deal. Instead, say “thank you for being so being so patient with me.” It let’s the other person know you understand your shortcomings and it gives them an opportunity to tell you they love you.”
#3. Spend more time together in the mornings, even if it means less sleep

“My significant other gets up around 5:30 every morning. Instead of staying in bed, I wake up make coffee for him before he hops in the shower. I get everything ready the night before even the cups with sugar and creamer and just hit the brew button when I jump out of bed, then we have coffee and breakfast together when he’s out of the shower. Seems like a small thing but it gives us 5 extra hours together a week and it’s some of the best moments of my day.”
#4. Take pictures of her when she’s not looking, and then send them to her during the day

“I take random pictures of her and the rest of the family, then I just send them randomly to her during her day. So out of no where she’ll get a nice pic of our kids, or the two of us somewhere. Then I basically tell her each time how lucky I feel to have her and the kids. I don’t overdo it. But just a subtle ‘I’m a very lucky man…’ and then a picture, but I never forget to do it, and I hope she knows I never take for granted the great things I have.”
#5. Dance with her

“I dance with her. Not anywhere special, it doesn’t even have to be in public, usually. I’ll just start dancing with her. We’ll be doing the dishes or something and I’ll put my arm around her waist and start humming.”
#6. Make a list of what they like, and then give it to them from time to time

“I get him these things from time to time – most recent was ‘mini cadbury eggs’ because he said it was his favorite Easter candy. I want him to know that I’m always thinking about him. I’m not so much a words person, but more of an actions person.”
#7. Prepare their toothbrush every morning

“All I do is put the toothpaste on it add a little water and set it on a little thing to keep it off the countertop. It’s a small gesture to let her know I’m thinking of her when I wake up and when I go to bed and all day in between. She loves it. I got the idea from my dad, who’s been doing it for my mom for like 38 years or whatever.”
#8. Give yourselves some “igloo time”

“For five minutes a day we huddle under a blanket, pretend we’re in an igloo, and discuss our high and low for that day. I don’t know why we make like it’s an igloo. There was probably a reason for it when we first started the practice and we’ve both forgotten about it by now.”
#9. Give each other small, inexpensive presents

“One of the best stories my mom told me about my grandparents. They had 12 kids on one, maybe one and a half salaries sometimes, so money was always tight. My Papa would work, Nana would stay home with the kids, but balance the checkbook and pay the bills. She’d give him an allowance every week for lunch, gas, and whatever little thing. He’d save as much of the remainder as he could and every few weeks to a month, he’d buy her a teacup and saucer from a china shop. He’d usually want to buy her the entire tea set, because she loved that sort of thing, but they’d end up selling the other pieces and he’d have to get a mismatching set. So now she has a ton of beautiful china that she adores, and none of it matches but it makes it better that way because it was more than just laying down a checkbook, it was the thought of him counting his pennies and nickels for weeks just to do something nice.”
#10. Make your very own “Fight Box”

“They call it a fight box. Some people build one of these at their wedding, but you can also put one together the first day you say I love you. Write love letters to each other and place into a box along with a bottle of wine. Nail it shut. When you have your first fight, open it up, pour the wine, go to separate corners, read the love letters, and remember what it’s all about.”
#11. If it’s special and it can break/wear down, keep a second pair so you can surprise them with it when the time comes

“She had broken this pair of rubber boots she was in love with and enjoyed jumping in puddles all the time. Of course they didn’t have the exact same boots at the store. She got new boots and she liked them but missed her old boots. I anticipated that she would eventually fall in love with the new pair as she got used to them. I went out and bought a second exact same pair and kept them at my house. Then about TWO YEARS later she texted me “I BROKE MY BOOTS :(((” When I showed up with the boots and told her the story she just about killed me with a bear hug.”
#12. Be a tease

“I told my ex-GF that I couldn’t pick her up from the airport after she was away for a week, but I’d give her the money for a cab once she got home. Then I went to airport in a suit, and stood in baggage claim holding up a sign with her name on it as if I was a limo service.”
#13. Leave notes for each other

“We have very different work schedules and he leaves for work before I even wake up, so every night I write him a note (a funny story or joke, thanking him for something he did earlier that day, etc.) and leave it by the coffeepot for him to read so it’s kind of like we get to ‘talk’ in the morning. In return, he makes coffee and opens all of the curtains so I can wake up to fresh coffee and natural sunlight.”
#14. Take their parents to lunch

“This is an even bigger gift to your significant other as your parents get older. Having one, often lonely parent, is a burden. Sometimes, I show up at her Dad’s house and take him out to lunch. He loves it, but she loves it even more. I do whatever I can to take some of that burden off her shoulders.”
#15. Make lots of tiny, small sacrifices

“We keep a book of Sudoku puzzles in the bathroom. I only do the puzzles on the left, even though we’re both right-handed.”
#16. Relax and kick back together

“There’s a lot of advice out there about doing insane activities together, but sometimes we ALL like to kick back, take off our shoes, and zone out to TV. So, we have shows we watch together on Netflix, and we’re not allowed to cheat and watch ahead. If we skip ahead, we buy the other person a candy bar or some beer. It all works out. I think it’s great watching a show with your loved one because the topics that come up in the show can be fodder for conversation down the line.”
#17. Cook together

“We cook dinner together every night. She usually makes a salad or the vegetables. I do the meat. It’s 30-45 minutes a night we work together to make something, and it’s every night.”
#18. Turn your phone off when it’s time for dinner

“I’m 31, but man, I have a hard time not looking at the thing for an hour or so. But when I do, and I look at her when she’s speaking, you can see her light up and she becomes a lot more talkative, happier about life, etc.”
#19. Let them have the last bite

“I always give my significant other the last bite of anything we’re sharing. Especially dessert. No matter how amazingly delicious…I insist.”
#20. If you don’t mind doing it, do it

“I make the bed every single day. I’ve never really cared about whether the bed was made because you just sleep in it right? My wife told me early in our relationship how much she liked to get into a made bed at night and that she thinks it makes the room look neater, but I didn’t take much notice and just kind of kept leaving it messy. One day I made it on a whim and when she came home from work it meant way more to her than I had realized. She had had a bad day and just that little gesture made her cry happy tears. I started making the bed every day and it’s such a small thing but she’s told me a few times how much it means to her!”
#21. Have some awesome hobbies that you do alone

“You can’t do everything together. Living with someone can be difficult if one or both people rely on the other for attention and entertainment all the time. My wife likes to read. I like to play video games and shoot hoops with the neighbors. We have things we like to do together, but it’s nice to be able to get away and do our own thing when we feel like being alone.”
#22. Exercise together and get high on endorphines

“Going out to eat together or for cocktails on typical dates gets old really fast, and after a long day of staring at a computer I usually don’t feel like seeing a movie. For some reason, I used to refuse to exercise in front of my partner, but since I started going for 20+ mile bike rides with my current boyfriend, I’ve realized how silly that was. Who cares about sweat? The experience of working out together is exhilarating…plus, the couple that exercises together has a better time in bed together. FACT.”
#23. Lay down together and just talk

“At one point, we realized we’d had sex about three times in 2 months, so we started trying to have sex at least once a week – and usually multiple times. In that effort, we also wound up spending a good deal of time just lying on the bed, chatting. For some reason, our conversations while we were lying there naked were always much more personal and intimate.”
#24. Just be there for them and listen

“He needs to talk things out to make decisions. I don’t – I’m the quiet one in the relationship. But, I listen and ask questions when I can, and it helps him. He knows I get bored (he’s a self-employed handyman, and he sometimes talks me through his improvement projects in DETAIL to make sure he’s prepared for the job). But, I listen because it helps him and it’s a small sacrifice to help him feel confident that he’ll be doing his job efficiently.”
Remember, no relationship is perfect, but it’s never too late to start making it more awesome.

#251 : 6 Signs Your Partner is Your Best Friend
Sunday, May 17, 2015 @ 8:02 AM
Falling in love is one of the most incredible and exciting part of your youth. Over time, your relationship may morph into something even greater and you realise how close you have grown to your significant other. They become your best friend and partner in crime. You feel like, together, you can take on the world!

Being best friends is a good sign of a long, lasting relationship. After all, an interview by ‘Your tango’ revealed that no relationship has ever passed the test of time without also being a friendship. Most of the time couples in long time successful marriages view their spouse as their best friend.

Best friends have a special kind of relationship, do you have such a relationship? Below are 6 signs to check if your partner is your best friend and if he/she isn’t then ask yourself why not.
1. Your partner is your safety blanket

He is the one you go to with all your problems. You trust your partner so much that you feel comfortable enough to share about your burdens. You confide in your partner for everything – when you have a bad day; when you are having trouble with something or when someone treats you badly. He is that shoulder to lean on.

Your partner is also the one you seek advice from. He knows you as well as you know yourself and he is capable of guiding you when it comes to making difficult choices. You find that he is the first person you want to text or call when something crops up. After all, best friends are the people who make your problems their problems, just so you don’t have to go through them alone.

“The best thing in life is finding someone who knows all your flaws, mistakes and weaknesses and still thinks you are completely amazing.”
2. You have more fun with your partner than with any other friends
Best friends are the people you instinctively gravitate towards because you love spending time with them. It doesn’t matter what you guys do, you will definitely have fun in each other’s presence.  In fact, sometimes it is perfectly fine for the both of you to do just about nothing and simply “chill”. The best part is that you can be yourself and act the craziest with him because you know he will never judge. If your partner is the person who entertains you more than anyone else, then your partner is also your best friend!

You may have no problem hanging out without your partner, but in the back of your mind, you want him to be a part of your outings and events and you end up bombarding them with “You should be here” texts.

“If love is the treasure, laughter is the key.”

3. Your partner can get along with your friends.

There is no doubt that you can get along with your partner and you often spend the most amount of time with him. However, it becomes a good sign when you feel that you prefer it if your partner were to hang out, even if part of a larger group of friends.  This shows that he isn’t just your lover, but also a good companion. After all, your group of friends reflect the kind of person you are; they are the ones that are as crazy and quirky as you. If your partner happens to fit in with your friends then it shows how similar you guys are.

In the first place, your partner is someone that you want to show off to your friends. You want all your friends to get to know your partner better so that they can be friends too.

“You can have friendship and you can have love, but only when you have both together, will you have a great love.”

4. You don’t fight too often, but when you do, neither of you take it to heart.

Friends can argue and get bitter but best friends never take it personally. If you can patch up quickly and forgive each other, it shows that you and your partner understand how important you relationship is. You are willing to take the time and effort to sort out your differences and frustration to come to a solution.

“Couples who fight are most likely stronger; it’s not the fighting that makes them stronger but what takes place after.”
5. You share many of the same interests.

You get along well because of common personalities and preferences. You can agree on most things and you share similar likes, dislikes, hobbies and habits with your partner. Best friends are best friends because they relate on so many different levels.

“A best friend isn’t just someone who’s always there for you. It’s someone who understands you a bit more than you understand yourself.”
6. You have numerous inside jokes with your partner.
You and your partner have been through so much and shared so many experiences that it is almost as if you can read each other’s’ mind. The two of you can burst out laughing at things that no one else understands. You can look at each other and tell what the other person is thinking. You also have self- created lingo that no one is privy to.

“Friendship is about finding people who are your kind of crazy.”

Now, think about how you are with your best friend. You tell each other everything. You look forward to being together and you freely give your time and energy to your friends. Do you do the same with your partner?
If you have a solid friendship with your partner, congratulate yourselves and celebrate your friendship this week. You will likely be together for a very long time.

#246 : 5 Nutrition Tips For Better Sleep
Saturday, May 2, 2015 @ 7:39 PM
Can't seem to fall asleep at night? Maybe it's because of what you're eating for dinner. Follow these 5 tips for a better night's rest

March is World Sleep Month, which means research institutes around the globe are releasing reports on the importance of shut-eye, as well as tips on how to get enough. In France, after observing the link between eating habits and sleep hygiene in a recent study, the National Institute of Sleep and Vigilance (INVS) and the health insurer MGEN share suggestions on how to eat to improve the chances of getting a good night's rest.
Image: Dusan Zidar/shutterstock.com
Never skip dinner: "If the body has not consumed enough energy, sleep will be fragmented. One must eat enough to make it through until morning," explains INSV president Damien Léger. The evening meal should be hearty yet balanced and easy to digest.
Have meat for lunch, slow carbohydrates for dinner: Foods that are rich in protein, such as meat, tend to heighten vigilance, so those who have trouble falling asleep may wish to avoid them later in the day. For dinner, focus instead on slow carbohydrates -- such as potatoes, whole wheat pasta or brown rice -- and dairy products, both of which are known to promote sleep. It is also important to have dinner two to three hours before turning in for the night.
Make herbal tea a bedtime ritual: Certain plants are known for their calming effects, and teas brewed from linden, chamomile, passion flower, hops and valerian are among those that can help ease the body into sleep. An evening cup of herbal tea is particularly effective when part of a relaxing routine performed each night in a calm, sleep-friendly environment.
Limit caffeine in the afternoon: Most insomniacs know to avoid coffee and caffeinated sodas in the afternoon, but it is important to remember that cocoa and tea are also to be consumed in moderation. Caffeine takes several hours to be eliminated from the body: half of the amount consumed is still present in the blood stream four to five hours after the last sip. For this reason, it is recommended to avoid these substances after 3pm.
Avoid the temptation of a nightcap: "Alcohol impacts sleep in two phases, facilitating it before interfering with it later on," says Joëlle Adrien of the INSV. While it may help lull an individual to sleep shortly after consumption, it can cause problems a few hours later, leading to lighter sleep and more frequent waking through the night, or even nightmares and sleep apnea.

#245 : Having Insomnia? Try this 4 ways out!
Friday, May 1, 2015 @ 10:42 AM
Can't sleep? Instead of tossing and turning or counting sheep, here’s what to do

1. Get out of bed
When you know you won’t fall asleep soon, get up, says Dr Kenny Pang, ear, nose and throat surgeon and sleep specialist at Asia Sleep Centre. And don’t set a sleep “time limit” for yourself as you can stress yourself unnecessarily.
2. Have a routine before bedtime
According to Dr Lawrence Epstein, chief medical offi cer of the US’s Sleep Healthcenters network and instructor in medicine at Harvard University in the US, our body craves routine and likes to know what’s coming. “By creating a pre-sleep ritual, you’re establishing a clear association between certain activities and sleep,” he says. Dr Pang recommends relaxing activities like reading a book, meditating, stretching and taking a warm bath.
3.Go back to bed only when you feel sleepy
Don’t head back just because you are bored of reading or meditating. And “forcing” yourself to sleep is futile as it only makes you more alert.
4.Take a melatonin pill
If you’re still awake between midnight and 1am, take a melatonin (sleep hormone) pill, which you can buy over the counter. Th is increases the amount of sleep hormone in you, helping you fall asleep. Th ese are not sleeping pills, which you should avoid taking, and it’s safe (no side eff ects) to take one pill a day, even for long periods, says Dr Pang. If it’s past 1am, don’t take the pill as you might not be able to wake up in time the next morning. Instead, he advises, just lie down and rest.

#240 : Ever Wonder How Does Your Friends Appear On Your Facebook Profile?
Sunday, April 19, 2015 @ 8:42 AM
Here’s why certain friends’ photos always show up on your Facebook timeline:

Kite Media decided to take a deeper look and we found a few surprising factors that contribute to why you will see certain friends’ photos show up more often in your friends picture box on your own profile. These factors include:
It’s safe to say that if a friend’s photo is showing up on your timeline, but you haven’t had any recent Facebook interaction with them, then, yes, that person has probably been spending a hefty amount of time looking at your profile.

YES – these are the people that Facebook stalk you! (to some extent). The pictures vary, but it seems like the same people are generally appearing there on a regular basis. I have always wondered why those regulars always show up – do they look at my timeline a lot, do I look at their timelines, am I tagged in photos with those people, have I chatted with/messaged any of them recently? – the answer to these questions varied for each person, but these seem like the most logical reasons as to why these people are always on my timeline.
My belief has always been that these are the people that look at my page the most. Mainly, because most of the people on my timeline are friends whose profiles I haven’t viewed for months. Well, with a little Google research I was able to find a legitimate explanation on GotKnowHow.com. Here it is:
The 9 friends shown in your Facebook Timeline friends box are determined by a number of factors, but mostly they will show friends that you appear to be closer with from interactions on Facebook. These 9 friends may be your closest friends, family members, crushes, Facebook stalkers or just friends that have recently viewed your profile. While the friends box will still show some random friends every so often as well, however most of the time the larger percentage of friends will be those who you are connected closer with as determined by Facebook’s friend algorithm.
Facebook most likely takes into account whose friends profiles (and photos) you view and who your friends view. And then compares these profile views in relation to all of your friends (or in the case of your friends, what other friend profiles and photos they view more often). So if Facebook notices that one of your friends views your profile more often than their other friends’ profiles, then more than likely this friend’s picture will start showing up in your friends box, especially if you view their profile too.
While these 9 friend pics do seem to change frequently, and still have around 2 random friends showing up to mix things up, overall your friends who show up in your 9 friends list box, are much more likely to be “connected” to you on some level, whether directly or indirectly, as compared to your other friends who don’t show up very often.
Keep in mind, because everyone has different friends, different amounts of friends and different types of relationships, everyone will have a slightly different reasoning as to why certain people show up in the friends box. And Facebook is always tweaking it’s algorithm that determines these factors, so the reason why certain friends show up may always be changing slightly. But at the end of the day there’s definitely a number of key factors that go into Facebook’s top secret friend algorithm that determine why certain friends photos show up in the 9 friends box at the top your Facebook Timeline profile. And more than likely it’s because they are your best friends, closest friends, family members, boyfriend, girlfriend, your Facebook crushes, Facebook stalkers, and/or friends that have recently interacted with you or checked out your profile.

#230 : How To Get The Best Out of Your Beauty Products (Skincare)
Sunday, March 8, 2015 @ 9:53 AM
How you apply beauty products is as important as what you use. Here's how to get the most out of everything from moisturiser to your eye cream.
NatMag - skincare
Use gentle, upward circular motions when applying moisturiser.

Moisturiser

'The key thing to remember when applying moisturiser is that the skin should never be pulled,' says Tom Ogden, brand manager of skincare range Alpha-H.
'Concentrate on areas of the face that need most attention – the cheeks and jowls, the creases around the nose and mouth and the forehead – using gentle, upward circular motions.'

Night cream

Use the same technique as you would with your daytime moisturiser – only apply your night cream at least ten minutes before you go to bed.
'You don't want your lovely, expensive night cream to spend its life on your pillow slip instead of your face!' says Tom Ogden.

Skin serum

Serums tend to have a smaller molecular structure than moisturisers, so apply them first for optimum absorption.
'A small amount of serum goes a long way,' says Tom Ogden.
'Apply your product using a "press and roll" motion, gently patting it into the skin. Leave for a couple of minutes to completely absorb before continuing with the rest of your skincare routine.'

Eye cream

Unless otherwise stated, eye creams should only be applied along the orbital bone, which you can trace around the perimeter of the socket.
'Use a small amount of product, warm it between your ring fingers and apply using a gentle patting motion,' says Tom Ogden.
'Never rub, pull, drag or apply heavy pressure as the skin tissue in the eye area is extremely fragile. Wait a few moments before applying your eye make-up.'

Cleanser

'There are no hard and fast rules with cleansers, so follow the application guidelines for the individual product,' says Tom Ogden.
'Generally, non-foaming cleansers are applied to dry skin using gentle circular motions, while foaming products should always be applied to slightly damp skin. Remember to work against gravity – lifting the skin upwards rather than pulling it down.'

Facial exfoliator

'Only apply an exfoliator to cleansed, slightly moist skin,' says Georgia Louise, founder of Georgia Skincare.
'Using circular motions, start from the neck and work your way up to your forehead, avoiding the skin under the eyes. Finish off by rinsing thoroughly with tepid water.'

Neck cream

Whether it's your regular day or night moisturiser or a specific neck treatment, always use your fingertips and gentle upward strokes to apply products to this area. ‘Your starting point should be the bust line,' says Tom Ogden.
'Start here and work your way up – imagine you're applying scaffolding to the whole area.'

Face masks

Always apply to clean, dry skin, unless otherwise stated.
'Never rub the skin aggressively when removing a mask,' says Tom Ogden.
'If it's difficult to take off, mix in a small amount of your cleanser, then rinse it off with lots of warm water – never hot.'

Body lotion

‘For best results, smooth on your lotion after a bath or shower while the pores are still open and the skin is damp,' says Georgia Louise.
'Leave for a few minutes before rubbing in any excess. Massage in using upward strokes or towards the heart – it will help your circulation and lymph drainage.'

Body exfoliator

Georgia Louise recommends body brushing all over to remove any dry skin before applying a body exfoliator in the shower or bath.
'It's best to exfoliate while the skin is wet,' she says.
'Apply your exfoliator to your hands and start by rubbing from the soles of feet, working your way upwards.'

#229 : 15 Easy Ways To Make A Difference
Sunday, March 1, 2015 @ 11:38 AM
Result! These tiny changes will improve your hair, skin, nails and body.

  1. Feed your face!
What our skin needs changes with the seasons, so it’s essential to adapt our skin-care routine accordingly.
  2. Care for your cuticles.
Massage a little cuticle oil into your nails just before bedtime. This will strengthen them in the long term and ensure they are well moisturised.
  3. Wear lipstick in an eye- popping colour.
It means you can get away with a lot less make-up, perfect for when you’re in a rush. A bold lip makes you look like you’ve made an effort.
  4. for bronze.
Bronzers are the perfect product to help you fake a healthy sun-kissed glow. for a light shade without any shimmer. Gently sweep it over your temples, forehead, cheeks, the tip of your nose, and along your jawbone.
  5. Don’t forget sunscreen…
Even on days when you can’t see the sun! Choose a daily moisturiser with an SPF to ensure that your skin is protected from future wrinkles and discolouration.
  6. Floss every day.
Brushing alone only cleans 65% of the surface of your teeth, and neglecting to floss not only results in halitosis, but can also lead to gum disease.
  7. Drink a lot.
At least eight glasses of water a day: it’s one of the cheapest and easiest beauty steps you can take. Hydrating your body from the inside will ensure your skin looks plump and moisturised.
  8. Lash yourself.
Invest in a new mascara. Mascara tubes are great breeding grounds for bacteria, and after about six months the formula starts to break down because of the exposure to air, so buy a new one twice a year. If you notice a strong, rancid smell emanating from the tube, throw it out immediately.
  9. Keep Cool.
There’s nothing quite like a piping hot bath or shower, but very hot water dries out the skin and can cause broken capillaries and spider veins. Resist the allure of the scalding hot bath!
  10. Strike oil.
Facial oils are brilliant for replenishing, revitalising and regenerating your skin because they work on a very deep level. Plus, the action of massaging them into the skin helps with microcirculation, giving you a rosy glow.
  11. Organise your make-up bag.
Set an hour aside to organise your make-up and throw out old products. Anything that looks or smells questionable should be discarded. Clean eye and lip pencils by sharpening them. While you’re at it, clean all your make-up brushes (this should actually be done once a week!) since build-up can lead to breakouts and infections.
Use a mild shampoo and ensure you lay them out on a clean,
flat surface to dry.
  12. Tressed for success.
The start of a new season is the ideal time to cut a fringe, change your hair colour or a little shorter. Just changing the parting can make a big difference to your hairstyle.
  13. Clean your mobile phone.
Mobile phones contain more germs per square inch than a public toilet! Eeuw, and to think we press them against our faces so regularly.
Clean yours every other day by wiping it down with a cotton ball dampened with alcohol.
  14. Scrub up.
Exfoliating the skin on your face and body at least twice a week gets rid of dead skin cells, allowing the products you use to penetrate more effectively for visible results.
  15. Choose a nourishing body wash over soap.
If your skin is easily irritated or prone to flakiness, then you’d be wise to avoid most soaps, as they will probably dry out your skin.

#228 : How To Take The Perfect Nap

Ah, napping! That is the thing that I used to do before I had a baby. Naps are rare around my house these days, so when I do get the chance for a mid-day snooze, I want to make the most of it. The infographic below shows you how to time out your naps so that you wake up feeling refreshed!
Have you ever woken up from a nap feeling worse than when you settled in? I call this the nap hangover, and it’s such a disappointment. The whole idea behind napping is to wake up feeling bouncy and caught up on sleep, so those nap hangovers are a serious let-down.

Napping: Tips and Benefits

For folks who don’t get enough sleep at night – whether it’s due to insomnia or a plain old hectic schedule – tend to get the most benefit from napping. When you don’t sleep enough at night, you accrue sleep debt, which the graphic below mentions. Napping can help you pay back that sleep debt and feel more alert and rested overall.

It turns out that there is quite a bit of science to napping, and timing out your naps properly can help you avoid the dreaded nap hangover! Of course, everyone’s sleep rhythms are a little bit different, and the times listed in the graphic below are averages.
That means that while a 10-20 minute nap might leave most folks ready to face the world, you might need a little bit more or less time. Think of these numbers as jumping-off points to finding your ideal napping lengths. You can click the graphic to view a larger version.

Of course, the first key to napping is actually falling asleep, right? Here are some resources to help you sleep, whether it’s at night or during the day:

#226 : Best Bentos, Japanese Lunch Sets and Takeaways
Thursday, February 19, 2015 @ 8:08 PM
For good quality, takeaway sushi, go to Meidi-Ya at Liang Court | Photo: Celine Asril
Meidi-Ya
For good takeaway sushi
We know, this is technically not a sit-down dining venue, but we can’t ignore the plump quality of the takeaway sushi and sashimi from Singapore’s largest Japanese supermarket. Nor can we ignore how these takeaway boxes have saved many hungry but time-strapped office workers and families in the area. The takeaway sushi sets ($2.50 onwards) are preferred over the bento boxes. Sushi sets come with freshly cut fish laid on big beds of rice, with two packets of soy sauce and wasabi. Yes, it’s non-traditional/typical of Japanese sushi, but the aim is to fill you up. We find the ika (squid) to always be the freshest, being smooth and not sticky. And we can never resist picking up side orders of chuka kurage (seasoned jellyfish, at market pric) and extra slices of sashimi.

Ootoya
Simple Japanese set meals, vibrant atmosphere
The no-frills teishokus (Japanese set meal with rice and miso soup) and no reservations policy are responsible for the long lines here. Arrive for an early lunch or dinner hour and you’ll find that though most dishes are available on the a la carte menu, it’s the set meals that are value-for-money. Even the simplest sets offer variety: the Kurozu pork set ($18.50) and the charcoal grilled chicken with basil sauce ($16.50) set are delicious, as is the beef hamburger set ($19.50). The rice, miso soup and chawanmushi (steam egg) that go with the sets are refillable too. This restaurant in Orchard Central can be quite vibrant and noisy, so put your earplugs on, or go with your noisiest friends and relatives, because no one is going to give you looks.

Tatsuya
For quality lunch sets
It’s okay if you don’t have the dosh for theomakase (chef’s selection, $280 onwards per person) at Tatsuya, the bento sets also of very good quality, and, in our opinion, offer more value for money. Be it the “Ladies Lunch” set ($26.80) or the regular bento set ($35-$50), they typically feature six elements. “Ladies Lunch” will generally include a potato salad, miso soup, six pieces of sushi, tempura, noodles or rice, and fruit. The regular bentos are more filling: the Sushi bento ($30.90), for example, comes with 14 pieces of sushi, tempura, chawanmushi (steam egg) and fresh fruit. The selection changes according to what comes in from Japan’s Tsukiji and Fukuoka markets. .

#225 : Best Sushi Chain Rice
Sunday, February 15, 2015 @ 8:51 PM

Dependable joints that roll out food we like, irrespective of which outlet we step into. We bring you the best Japanese chain restaurants -  conveyor belt and la carte.
Itacho Sushi Best sushi rice in town
The menu is a little difficult to navigate, and with the multiple order chits, the entire process can get a little frustrating. But once you get past that, you’re in sushi heaven. There are at least 100 varieties of sushi and sashimi for selection. A must-try is the salmon with soy sauce sushi. At 40 cents a piece, it is one of the best deals in town though these are limited to two pieces per person. The shari (sushi rice) is among the best we have tried, moist but not too starchy. The grilled fish also has a subtle smoky flavour that works well. We also recommend the silky smooth steamed egg, or chawanmushi, with crab ($4.20). The restaurant at Bugis is often full, so if you are determined to get a seat, try the outlets at Ion Orchard or JCube.

Sushi Tei Colourful and inventive sushi that children will enjoy
One of Singapore’s most popular homegrown brands has recently turned its gaze back to the community after a period of overseas expansion. It is venturing into the heartlands, with newly opened outlets in Serangoon, Bedok and Katong. You might hear the occasional crying child at this family-friendly restaurant, but as a consolation, the prices here are a little kinder to your wallet. Keep children happy with the Dragon Roll ($14) that is shaped like a dragon. Ebi tempura is wrapped in shari and topped with a delectable avocado sauce. We trust they’ll love the Golden Roll ($16) too. This one is drizzled with a tangy mango sauce.

Tampopo

CRITIC’S PICK TampopoGood for signature ramen and tonkatsu
Located at hot spots Liang Court and Takashimaya, Tampopo’s winning formula is undoubtedly its black pigshabu ramen ($14.30) and the tonkatsu (deep-fried pork cutlet, $16.80) – two items on which it has made its name. Its sushi does not fare too badly either. We recommend the salmon and kani roll ($14.80) ― think lightly torched fish with crisp cucumbers, balanced with the creamy avocado, soft rice and sweet crab meat. Another all-time favourite is the generous California roll ($9.80) that's large enough to share.

Tomi Sushi

Tomi Sushi
Authentic handrolls and sushi rice
This Japanese restaurant dates back to the 1950s in Niigata. It started its first restaurant outside Japan in Singapore (Parco Marina Bay in 2010). The secret to its success is its highly-prized Koshihikari rice, which is grown with water from melting ice caps on mountains. This gives plump grains of rice that feature in its sushi andtemaki (handrolls). Make a special order for the meaty ebi tempura temaki ($10, it is not on the menu) or deep-fried battered prawn handroll. Got some extra cash to spare? Go for the Tokujyo nigiri sushi set ($59) which includes the top-of-the-range maguro otoro (fatty tuna belly) sushi that will simply melt in your mouth.
Tomi Sushi | Address: 238 Thomson Road, Velocity @ Novena Square, #02-76/77; also at Millenia Walk │Tel: 62552355 │ Opening hours: Daily 11.30am–10.30pm
